North Landing Bridge to Close for Repairs

Release Date:  Friday, October 30, 2009  2 p.m.

Public Works has issued a reminder from the US Army Corps of Engineers that they will be closing the North Landing Bridge at 9 am on Monday, Nov. 16 for repairs. The closure is estimated to be for 60 days, and detour information will be issued beginning Monday, Nov. 2.

Work that will be done during the closing includes:  additional security and safety upgrades to the bridge house, removal and replacement of existing bridge surface (steel grid and concrete fill), some structural steel work, some underwater support pilings, repair concrete abutments, replace traffic control lights and poles, and replace traffic control gates.

Work started on the underwater support pilings on Sept. 15, and repairs on the North Landing Bridge House began Oct. 5. No closure was required for this work.

The work that will require closing the bridge includes removal and replacement of the existing bridge surface, structural steel work, and painting of the structural steel. The last resurface and painting was done in the early 1990’s.

With the steel grid delivery set for the first week of December, the contractor is scheduled to start removal of the existing surface on Nov. 16.

Public Works is coordinating the notice and official detour route with the Corps of Engineers and the City of Chesapeake.
